The Art of Setting Sail & New Adventures (Finding your New Direction)

Do you need to find a new adventure? A fresh new direction in life? The changing of seasons always seems to call on us to consider, "Are we still going in the right direction? Or is it time to pivot?" What direction are you sailing in, and is it the still the one that is calling to your heart or is it time to reconsider?

And the best way to consider those questions? Is to go inward. Read on to find out more.

You know, It’s unmistakably Fall here in my neck of the woods. The days are getting shorter, the light closing up like a flower earlier and earlier…. The first few leaves are just barely spotted with a flaming red here, a vibrant yellow there. All of which has me pondering how we tend to think of Fall as a contraction, a time of shuttering up, of closing up shop, hibernating… going to sleep. We rarely think of it as a deep, widening expansion happening from within us. As we start pulling our energy away from the outside world, the carnival of summer distractions and delights, the natural heights of extroversion we all seem to go through in making the most of the summer season… We see the ebb of not just the light and long warm days, but also the peaking of our ambitions for the year.. And we begin the process of letting the things that came before go…. The goals we made, the big wins, and the goals we missed, that summer beach body ideal weight we did or didn’t manage… And instead, we pull in deep, and start to plant new seeds, new ideas, free from distractions and obligations. I’m convinced the new year, the new adventure doesn’t really start for us in January. Instead, I’m a big believer that the seeds of next adventure are being sown right here, right now in this moment... .... when we start to plunge inward.

Those seeds begin in what we are thinking, feeling, deepening and widening right now from within. The adventure we're setting off on begins, not from the winds outside of us, but from the winds of change that stir within us. There are after all two kinds of expansion — inward and outward. And both are needed. We can't achieve much of worth in the outside world if we aren't just as committed to exploring and discovering our inside world -- our emotions, our wants, our values, our past, and our deepest desires. And I believe we aren’t shutting down or closing up shop at all, we’re beginning the process of setting sail again, of taking up the new adventure. And that’s what we’re doing this month in this series of blogs and podcasts. Setting sail, from within, digging into the new adventure. Heeding our own inner calling, our own inner direction… Gearing up, once again, to: “Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ― Mark Twain And all good journeys, all destinations we ultimately aim for, start from within. We get a feeling, a hunch, a calling… to expand, to explore, to dream and discover where we want to go next. We go inward and begin thinking even more deeply about who we are, what we want, and just where in the hell we think we’re going next… Without all the distractions. Without all the input from other people. Without all the pressure from the outside. So, let’s begin the adventure this month by spending some time considering, what's been calling you? What's got your attention? What are you craving lately?

Much Love & Happy Sailing!
