A lot of people want to know, "What is coaching like?" And what's the first session, especially going to be like? If you've never been coached one-to-one, but been curious, it can be a little daunting to sign up for something without knowing what to expect! So let me put your fears (and curiosity) to rest, shall we? Read on to find out more!
A lot of people are curious about life coaching, especially if they've never had any one-to-one sessions with anyone. Well, let me share with you what a first session is like.
Imagine getting to talk about whatever is troubling with you, without being interrupted. Sounds good right?
Imagine being heard without someone suggesting solutions, or problem-solving for you. Without pressuring you to hurry up & figure it out. And without be distracted or anxious by what you have to say. Instead they are fully present to you.
You're being fully heard & listened to in a safe space, where someone only wants to know more about you and what you've been going through. What your dreams and hopes are... What your troubles are...
A whole lot of people don't get that in their life. Especially, women.
And getting a taste of that in a first coaching session can be pretty healing all on it's own.
Imagine someone wanting to know, "What's it like to be you?"
"What's it like to procrastinate on that big work project?
Tell me more about that."
"Tell me about over-eating. What are you over-eating? What flavor of ice cream? When is it happening?
And what it's like to eat it... ? What do you love about it?"
It's amazing how many times a client confides in me that no one has ever asked them what's it like to be them! And what a difference getting this information makes.
"I've never thought about it before but when I eat that bowl of ice cream I am gleeful!"
Oh, gleeful? Interesting! Why gleeful?
"Because I get to be naughty and break the rules! I follow rules all day long, and by 9pm all I want is to do whatever I want -- whenever I want! It's like a rebellion! It feels so good!"
They've been to 3, 4 sometimes 6 different coaches and no one has ever been curious or wanted to know more about the experiences they've been having.
But that's the first thing we should all want to know, because we never, ever do something without having a good reason for doing it.
There is always something we are getting from doing the thing, even if it's seemingly self-destructive.
So that is what a first session is like. You talk, and express yourself. And we discover it all together. It's amazing how much better we feel, even after the first session! Being listened to is powerful!
